Relationship Maintenance: What This Means for You and Your Family

In the beginning, relationships are fun, exciting and easy. Not much effort is required to maintain the relationship as the level of passion and satisfaction is quite high especially at the very early stages. However, as time passes by things change and couples find themselves dragged in the daily routine and boredom starts to creep in the relationship. Responsibilities start overweighing the relationship and the couple becomes more disconnected and distant. This is the time for couples to start putting in the work to maintain the relationship. Here are a few behaviors I suggest for clients who do marriage counseling and couples therapy with me to maintain their relationship:

Compliment Your Partner

Remember that praise and compliments go a long way in making your partner feel loved and special. In the midst of your daily routine, you may find that the only feedback you are giving your partner sounds more like orders or criticisms. This shouldn’t be the case if you want to maintain your relationship. Positive feedback in the form of compliments is extremely beneficial for your bond together.

Spend Fun Time Together

As your relationship matures, you might find that the entertaining and amusing side of things deteriorates leading to a more mundane life. Therefore, having a fun and enjoyable time together could be one of the best things you could do to maintain your relationship. Travel together, try a new activity together or even play cards at home to revive the liveliness.

Physical Touch

Allow yourself to be more affectionate in the relationship by having more physical touch with your partner. Hold hands more often, hug one another and kiss in the morning and before going to bed, or give one another a foot massage. Physical touch is one of the most effective ways to bring back the lost romance in the relationship.

Listen and Validate

Spend more time listening to your partner with the intent to be there and validate not to respond or defend. Listening from a place of curiosity and being empathetic makes your partner feel safe in the relationship and more emotionally connected to you. Use words like “tell me more about your day” or “I hear you” or “I understand how you feel”.
